School Testing In Washington State

School Testing In Washington State

Test results show Washington high school students do well in reading and writing on statewide tests but fall short in science.

Of this year's tenth graders, only about half are passing the science assessment.

81 percent passed the reading test on their first try and nearly 84 percent passed the writing test.

Results from math tests will be released in August.

The high school proficiency exam is one of four state requirements for graduation.

RoadCheck 2011

RoadCheck 2011

Washington State patrol troopers and inspectors checked nearly 12 hundred commercial vehicles during last week's three-day "RoadCheck 2011."

The patrol says they issued nearly 18 hundred tickets for violations, took 214 vehicles out of service for safety violations and removed 43 drivers from behind the wheel, mostly for record of duty violations.

One driver was arrested for drunken driving and two had suspended licenses.

Geese Study

Geese Study

Washington Fish and Wildlife biologists and volunteers are putting leg bands on a thousand Canada geese to study population trends in Eastern Washington.

Waterfowl specialist Mikal Moore says they're trying to understand why nesting is declining in rural areas while complaints about urban geese have been rising.

The banding project began this week and continues through next Tuesday. Geese are currently easy to catch because they are molting and unable to fly.

O'Doherty's Irish Grille Opening Northside Pub

North side residents will have a reason to stay closer to home this July. O'Doherty's, a downtown Spokane Irish grille, will be opening a second location up north at the former location of Rogue Coffee off of Hawthorne and Division next to the Department of Licensing for vehicles and vessels. Instead of being an Irish Grille, however, this new venture will be just an Irish pub.

Owner, Tim O'Doherty hopes to have the new location opened by July 1st with a soft opening just before the 4th of July weekend.

Three panels in stainless steel and ceramic mix Shadle’s green and gold with giant pinecones in a new installation of public art called “Highland Fling” by Anne Storrs.

The pieces hang on the north exterior wall of Shadle Park High School’s new gym, facing the promenade, and are readily visible as people walk from the north parking lot down to the main entrance of the school.

Spokane County Raceway, Races for Success

Spokane County Raceway, Races for Success

If the last two events at Spokane County Raceway are any indication this season should be more successful than last. The Oval is open along with a new road track and the quarter mile has been upgraded, these have people coming in and having standing room only if your late. The NHRA Lucus Oil drag racing series continues this weekend and expectations are high. Get there early with chairs and some patience. Parking is 5 bucks and the lines move slowly at times, once your in there is plenty of room and a bit to look at.
