Spokane Country Club files for bankruptcy

Spokane Country Club files for bankruptcy

Two months after losing a $500,000 judgment in a five-year long gender discrimination case, the Spokane Country Club has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The club filed for bankruptcy Thursday, claiming between $1 million and $10 million in debt, the lion's share of the debt coming from a $1.1 million claim for fees and costs to attorney Mary Schulz for representation of four plaintiffs in a five-year legal battle against the club.

Schulz was listed among the top 20 creditors the club owes money and is the only creditor whose claim is listed as disputed.

In March a jury has ruled in favor of four women in a gender discrimination case. The plaintiffs in the case claimed the club denied them full benefits because of their gender. The Spokane Country Club lost the case and the court awarded the plaintiffs more than $500,000.

The women had originally sued the club for $4.5 million.

Kyra Wine defies the odds

Kyra Wine defies the odds

In 2008, three-year-old Kyra Wine became the victim of the worst case of child abuse in Benewah County history, her injuries so severe doctor's amputated her feet. Now, five years later, she's an active, happy eight-year-old girl.

The abuse Kyra and her sister Amanda endured is heartbreaking and unimaginable but now they are thriving.

"Every birthday, yeah, every birthday is special," Kyra's grandma, Deanna Wine said.

For her eighth birthday, Kyra didn't ask for anything special.

"I just let them get whatever they want," Kyra said.

Making the gifts on her grandma's kitchen table an even bigger surprise; a birthday is always a big deal when you're a kid, but when you're Kyra, each candle carries more than a wish. They're a symbol of survival, a light of hope.

"When this all happened with Kyra the doctors said that basically she had hours," Deanna said. "If she hadn't been taken to the hospital she had just hours to live."

On June 17, 2008 Benewah County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home for a welfare check on Kyra, then three-years-old, and her six-year-old sister Amanda. They couldn't have found them any sooner.

Cat rescued after being stuck in a tree for a week

A cat in Chattaroy is safe and sound with her owner after being stuck 60 feet above ground for six days.

A KXLY viewer, Christina Poor, emailed us asking for help to get her neighbor's cat down from a pine tree in the Riverside Village Mobile Home Park. The cat had been up in the branches for almost a week and was so high that residents couldn't reach her.

The owner had contacted the local fire station, but learned that despite what we see on T.V. fireman don't actually rescue cats from sticky situations. She then called arborists around the area, but couldn't afford the fee to save her pet.

SCRAPS was able to contact the Pacific Northwest Animal Welfare Project. The group helps cover the costs of veterinary care, foster homes and transportation of local rescued animals and operates only on donations. PNW Animal Welfare Project paid for an arborist to bring the cat down safely.

What can you do if your cat get stuck?

A Spokane man who spent months fighting for his life at Harborview Medical Center has passed away.

Shawn Apperson was severely burned in a house fire last December after helping his fianc and their baby escape out a window. Apperson didn't fit through the window and was later found by firefighters.

"It was just a nightmare, all very sad,"Shawn's father, David Apperson, said.

Shawn spent five months in ICU at Harborview and went through countless surgeries. He had burns on 65-percent of his body.

"He's a vigilant warrior," David said.

For months, Shawn made tremendous progress but, on March 4, everything changed.

"Shawn had an episode that turned him into a different direction," David said.

Shawn went into cardiac arrest. His dad said his liver stop functioning and he became paralyzed. On May 3, he died at Harborview with his family by his side.

"Shawn made a decision when he begin to save his family and he didn't stop. He put their lives ahead of his own regardless of what was going to happen," he said.

In this tragedy, David said his family came together.
