Hillyard Variety liquidating, going out of business | Business

A Hillyard landmark will have to shut down after eight years in business next week.
Hillyard Variety announced recently that it is selling the rest of its inventory and will be closing Feb. 20. Until then, all of the store's products will be sold for 50 percent off.
“We just had no traffic, no foot traffic,” owner Marv Peterson said. “Tired of giving the government what we're making. How many reasons do you need?”
Volunteers from Rogers High School's Career Focus program are currently helping the owners empty the store's basement and the store's inventory will either be sold on eBay, at a yard sale or donated to a place like Team Challenge.
“We would love to retire, but we probably won't get to,” Peterson said.
With their business closing, Marv and his wife Vickie were emphatic about thanking the community. Vickie had a double lung transplant four years ago, and the community “got behind us and operated the store for nearly a year,” Marv said.
“We really like it here in Hillyard,” Vickie said. “Nothing wrong with the area. It's just the economic times we're living in.”
