Suspicious house fire under investigation

The Spokane Fire Department is investigating a suspicious early morning house fire at 2211 East Euclid Ave.

Ten fire crews responded to the house fire after neighbors reported smoke coming from the residence. The fire started in the back of the home; the house was unoccupied and the front door was locked but someone may have illegally gained entry to the home through the back door.

The large response to the fire was due to the fact that there were other buildings nearby and heavy vegetation close to the home, so the fire department didn't want to take any chances in getting the fire quickly under control.

Neighbors say no one has lived in the house for five months though they said the owner would sometimes mow the grass. The fire is being called an incendiary fire, which means it might have been started by someone.

An investigation will determine whether the fire was an accident or arson

Euclid Ave. was closed for about an hour from Stone to Lee while fire crews worked to extinguish the fire.

Detectives retrieve shooting suspect's getaway car

The suspected gunman in a fatal drive-by shooting in North Spokane ditched his getaway car and may now be trying to find another way to get out of town.

Detectives say the shooting suspect, 19-year-old Issiah Schauman, gunned down his victim, Fabian McBride, at Rhodes and Atlantic, one block west of Division Street, after the pair had briefly argued in the street.

Investigators were staking out his car, a late model Chrysler New Yorker, hoping Schauman would come back for it. They were aided in the search for the vehicle when witnesses spotted the vehicle leaving the shooting scene.

"It was a dark blue Chrysler New Yorker," witness John Hamilton said moments after the shooting.

Nearby residents even wrote down the license plate number and that aided detectives in finding the car on East Sanson, a few blocks from where Schauman used to live. Detectives took the car under surveillance but gave up when it was reported the vehicle had been located. The car was impounded; officers have not found a murder weapon so they consider Schauman armed and dangerous.

Meanwhile, at the shooting scene a memorial has gone up for McBride.

One killed in North Spokane shooting

Spokane County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a deadly shooting that happened in broad daylight near the intersection of Atlantic and Wedgewood in North Spokane.

Just before 1 p.m. witnesses say they heard shots fired near an apartment complex at Rhodes and Atlantic, just one block west of Division Street.

"We heard five or six pops and then we heard a car starting to come down this way and then we saw a car go by as fast as he could, possibly 50 miles an hour. Quickly with one person in the car," witness Pepper Dixon said.

That car was described as a blue Chrysler New Yorker.

After the gunshots witnesses say the driver threw the car in reverse, turned around and sped south on Atlantic.

"I heard four gunshots, like they were really close," John Hamilton said.

Hamilton ran outside to see the victim down in the middle of the street.

"I ran down there, because he was laying on the ground to see if he was OK and they were rendering first aid to him, you know it must have been his friends or neighbors or something and they said you need to stay back and I said 'Do you need any help?' and they said no," Hamilton said.

Monroe Street Bridge Work Completed Early

Monroe Street Bridge Work Completed Early

With road construction happening all over Spokane, drivers will be excited to hear that work on the Monroe Street Bridge will be completed a few days early. The bridge will be open in time for Friday's morning commute.

The bridge has been closed since June 3rd to work on stormwater management from city streets within the Kendall Yards development. The project will redirect stormwater that currently drains untreated into the Spokane River.

Now, that water will be directed into a retention tank and pumped into a treatment area located in Olmsted Green, a new park being built in Kendall Yards. The stormwater will be filtered and percolated back into the ground. The project is part of the new Integrated Clean Water Plan the city is developing.

Thousands in donations needed to give kids swim passes

Without tens of thousands more in donations, 1,300 Spokane kids will be left out of public pools this summer.

Spokane city pools open on Monday and Spokane County and Spokane Valley pools open Friday. With the number of kids on the free season pass wait list growing by the day, the need for donations is urgent.

Money doesn't concern 8-year-old George, who looks longingly at the A.M. Cannon Pool in the West Central neighborhood.

"My grandpa will actually get [passes] so we can go swimming this year," George said.

George and other boys at the park Thursday say the slide is the main attraction at the Cannon pool.

"You can race your friends on them," an 'almost 11-year-old' Nicholas said.

Nicholas is one of the hundreds of kids who has a free season pass already. The passes are provided by the "Make a Splash" program sponsored by the Spokane Parks Foundation.

"Sometimes the West Central [community center] makes it to where you can go there for free if you sign the paper, which I was smartly doing," Nicholas said with a smirk.
